Swim Instructor - Central Branch YMCA

Under the direction of the Central Branch YMCA Aquatics Director, the Swim Instructor is responsible for providing a safe and positive instructional swimming environment for all YMCA members and program participants. 

They must provide strong leadership, instruction, and motivation for developing the abilities of swimmers of various ages, skill levels, and those with disabilities. 

This is done by conducting swim lessons that are in accordance with the core values and standards set by the National Aquatic YMCA programs, including adaptive swim principles and practices for those individuals with disabilities.

Instructing private lessons is an available option. This entails working one-on-one with individuals and tailoring the lesson guides for that specific person. Includes flexible scheduling to work with the availability of the individual.

Through the work of the Swim Instructor, participants of every ability will learn to swim more confidently and/or expand their current skills in a safe and positive environment that nurtures a love for swimming they can enjoy for life.



Starting pay range: $8.50 to $9.50 depending on experience

Hours Available at the Central Branch YMCA 1020 Barr Street, FW IN 46802:

  • Sundays 12 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • Mondays 12:30- 3 p.m. 
  • Tuesday 5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. 
  • Wednesday 7:15 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
  • Friday 5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.

Free training is provided to ensure proficiency with the National Aquatic YMCA Program.



  • Minimum of 16 years of age.
  • Reliable transportation to attend work.
  • Able to fulfill all demands and skills in spirit, mind, and body for a certified swim instructor in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Positive, service-oriented attitude serving diverse groups of people in regard to age, ability, ethnicity, gender, race, economic status, religion, etc.
  • Open to being trained to provide adaptive swim lessons for individuals with disabilities.
  • Team player willing to contribute to the culture, mission, and values of the Y.



  • Free individual membership at all YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne facilities (Allen, Whitley, Wells counties); part-time staff have the opportunity for a small cost to add additional eligible members.
